Champions League: Real Madrid wins second leg but still loses to PSG

Mbappe's heroics not enough as Real Madrid advances on aggregate

PSG holds narrow lead heading into second leg

Real Madrid defeated Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Wednesday, but it wasn't enough to overcome the French side's 1-0 advantage from the first leg.

Kylian Mbappe gave PSG the lead on the night with a stunning strike in the first half, but Karim Benzema equalized for Real Madrid just before the break. Vinicius Junior and Luka Modric added goals for the Spanish giants in the second half, but it was too little too late as PSG held on to win the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

PSG had the better of the first half and deservedly took the lead through Mbappe. The French forward picked up the ball on the left wing, skipped past Dani Carvajal and fired a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Real Madrid responded well to going behind and leveled the scores just before half-time. Benzema latched onto a through ball from Toni Kroos and lifted the ball over the onrushing Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The second half was all Real Madrid, and they eventually took the lead through Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian winger cut inside from the left and fired a low shot into the far corner of the net.

Modric then made it 3-1 with a stunning strike from outside the box. The Croatian midfielder received the ball from Benzema and curled a shot into the top corner of the net.

Real Madrid continued to press for a fourth goal but PSG held on to secure their place in the quarter-finals. The French side will now face either Liverpool or Inter Milan in the next round.

Reaction

"We played a great game tonight, but it wasn't enough," said Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti. "We created a lot of chances, but we couldn't take them. We have to learn from our mistakes and move on."

"We are very happy to have reached the quarter-finals," said PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino. "We knew it would be a tough game, but we showed great character and determination to win. We are now looking forward to the next round."
