Tornado Emergency: What It Means and How It Differs from Warnings and Watches

Understanding the National Weather Service's Alert Levels

The National Weather Service (NWS) has established three alert levels to inform the public about the potential for tornadoes:
  1. Tornado Warning: Indicates that a tornado has been spotted or indicated by radar and is a threat to life and property in the specified area.
  2. Tornado Watch: Indicates that conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes in a specified area.
  3. Tornado Emergency: The NWS's highest alert level, issued when a violent tornado has been confirmed to be on the ground and is a grave threat to life.

Tornado Emergency: A Critical Alert

A tornado emergency is a life-threatening situation. It means that a violent tornado has been observed and is expected to cause severe damage and loss of life. When a tornado emergency is issued, immediate protective action must be taken.

Unlike a tornado warning, which provides advanced notice, a tornado emergency indicates that the tornado is already on the ground and moving towards populated areas. There is no time to wait for shelter if you receive a tornado emergency alert.

How to Respond to a Tornado Emergency

If you hear a tornado emergency alert, take the following steps:
  • Seek shelter immediately in the lowest level of a sturdy building, such as a basement or storm cellar.
  • Protect your head and body by covering it with a blanket or mattress.
  • Stay away from windows and exterior walls.
  • Remain in shelter until the danger has passed.

Difference Between Tornado Warning and Watch

A tornado watch indicates that conditions are present for tornadoes to develop, but it does not mean that a tornado has been spotted or is imminent. A tornado warning, on the other hand, means that a tornado has been sighted or detected by radar and is a direct threat to life and property. It is important to take both tornado watches and warnings seriously. During a tornado watch, be prepared to seek shelter if conditions worsen. When a tornado warning is issued, immediate action is necessary to protect your safety.
