Largest Earthquake in Mindanao
A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippines island of Mindanao, triggering a local tsunami warning. The quake, which struck at 9:15 p.m. local time on Thursday, October 13, was the largest to hit Mindanao in recent years.
The earthquake caused widespread damage and triggered landslides in several areas. A pregnant woman died, four people were injured, and nine are still missing as a result of the quake. Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes in coastal areas due to the tsunami warning.
The PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) has issued a number of earthquake bulletins since the main shock, including:
- A 5.9-magnitude aftershock struck at 10:16 p.m. local time on Thursday, October 13.
- A 5.3-magnitude aftershock struck at 1:02 a.m. local time on Friday, October 14.
- A 4.8-magnitude aftershock struck at 4:05 a.m. local time on Friday, October 14.
The PHIVOLCS is continuing to monitor the situation and has advised the public to remain alert for possible aftershocks.
