Jude Hatt: A Pioneer in Regional Journalism

Early Life and Career

Jude Hatt began his journalistic career at the age of 16 as a reporter for the Westmorland Gazette. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming editor of the Kendal Mercury at the age of 21.

In 1974, Hatt founded the Cumbria Life magazine, which quickly became one of the most popular regional magazines in the UK.

The Importance of Regional Journalism

Hatt was a passionate advocate for regional journalism. He believed that local newspapers and magazines played a vital role in keeping communities informed and connected.

In a 2015 interview, Hatt said, "Regional journalism is the lifeblood of democracy. It's how people find out about what's happening in their own communities, and it's how they hold their elected officials accountable."

Hatt's Legacy

Hatt retired from journalism in 2019, but his legacy continues through the many journalists he mentored and the magazines he founded.

He was awarded an OBE for his services to journalism in 2010, and in 2019 he was inducted into the Cumbria Hall of Fame.

Conclusion

Jude Hatt was a pioneer in regional journalism. He dedicated his life to informing and connecting communities, and his legacy will continue to inspire journalists for years to come.
